About Us

Independence From Tobacco

The mission of Smoke-Free Knoxville is to empower the community to reduce death, disease, disability and financial impact related to the use of tobacco.

  • Starting in 1994, the Knox County Health Department dedicated a full-time employee to tobacco prevention and use reduction. A portion of the full-time tobacco prevention and use reduction coordinator employee duties are to serve as the facilitator or county liaison on the Smoke-Free Knoxville coalition. This individual works closely with executive committee.
  • In 1999 the Smoke-Free Knoxville Coalition wrote the Tobacco Use Prevention and Reduction plan for Knox County. The Tobacco Use Prevention and Reduction Plan was written using the Centers for Disease Control Best Practices for Tobacco Control. Knox County became the first County in Tennessee to have a Tobacco Use Prevention and Reduction Plan.
  • Since forming, the Smoke-Free Knoxville Coalition has strived to reduce tobacco use in the community using a comprehensive approach to positively impact the community. This approach includes working to move from low impact activities to high impact policies, programs and interventions.
